Chris had this great idea – the kids that didn’t feel comfortable drawing their chosen species were offered the opportunity to trace it –  a great way to lessen the stress and still have them learn the leaf and petal shapes.  The container is going to look amazing.  Lots of work to do yet though.

Next we went out to the front yard and tried out our seed bomb recipe.  Chris supervised this activity that involved Dillon and Bruce delving hands first into soft clay, compost, and pua kala seeds.  Unfortunately, the mixture called for 2 cups of water which ended up being too wet to make the big marble-like shapes we wanted.   Still we have about 3 dozen free-form seed bombs.  Now we need to investigate our germination rate.

Saturday April 7th will be our next Volunteer Day. We will be planting common native species, pulling weeds and watering the out-plants. There will also be time for a tour an introduction to some of our plant species. Please bring your family and friends but don’t forget to RSVP!

As always…Please meet at the corner of Quarry Road and Waikoloa Road (near the new wiliwili fence) at 8:00am, transportation to the site will be provided. If you feel comfortable driving your personal vehicle into the site you may. Our work day will conclude at 1pm and refreshments will be provided. Please come prepared with hiking boots, long pants, sunscreen and adequate water (at least 1L/32oz). Gloves, tools and safety equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own. The team planted about 100 plants in a 1/2 acre site around an old wiliwili and uhiuhi tree with the idea that clearing weeds and maintaining the area surrounding these old trees might promote regeneration. Well, that and the .50in of rain that we saw this month seems to have worked. A wild wiliwili seedling has popped up right in the planting site! After three weeks in the ground and limited watering all of the plants are doing well and many of them are putting out new leaves. The planting included common natives such as a’ali’i, ‘akia and naio, as well as a few endangered species such as ohai. So far it is looking great, thanks everyone!
